The Secrets of Ongii Fake Ger

Today we would continue our journey to the Southern Gobi. It was still a long way off and we would have to stop in the Middle Gobi tonight. A nice place to stop is at the Secrets of Ongii Ger Camp as it is right by the Ongii ruins. There is not much to see here but at least it is more then just sand. Ongii was the largest monastery in the area back in the late 1600s when it housed over 1000 monks. It was mostly destroyed in 1939 as part of the religious purge from the Communist Party.

There is still a monk or two wandering around here. They are elusive but can be captured on camera at a great distance.

A nice place to walk around by yourself and let your thoughts fill in the blanks. Let the site tell you of its past.

All that is left from the original floor.

A few scraps of carvings that once decorated the buildings. All destroyed by communism. I thought communism just really means sharing and I think that was it's big selling point. However, there are two problems with the human race that would prevent this concept from ever working. One, we have lazy people, and two, we have greedy people. Lazy people will milk the system for everything its got and greedy people will manipulate the system to take everything from it.

All other Gers I stayed in on this trip were real Gers, in that they were constructed in the traditional methods and could be easily be moved. Even HS Khann was a legitimate Ger in terms of construction. However, tonight I would be staying in a fake Ger. Meaning it was only meant to look like a Ger but the actual structure was prefabricated. Notice the full wood beams on the side and that there is no middle support structure. You can't easily travel with this. But it was still a nice place to rest even if the traditional vibe was lost.

It even came decorated with a picture of what I was told were famous singers in Mongolia.

It did still have a bit of charm in that the doorway was low enough for a proper head banging.

The main lodge had decent facilities with flushable toilets and hot water showers. But also had a kind of a Disneyland feel as it also had a spa.

But we were here just for a good nights rest before continuing our nomadic journey in the morning.
